Itattained its greatest power by the destruction ofSybaris in 510; but it sustained a severe defeatfrom the Locrians on the river Sagras. [It isuncertain whether this defeat was before or afterthe destruction of Sybaris. Justin (xx. 2) placesit before the arrival of Pythagoras, and there-fore about 560 : Strabo speaks of it asmarking the decline of the power of Croton, andtherefore after 510.] It suffered greatly inthe wars with Dionysius, Agathocles, and.
