No. 1. consistsof an area from the right labium majus measuring 5^2 by 4 cm. inthe distal portion of which there is an indurated ulcer 3X1 cm., withragged undermined edges and base covered with a grayish necroticmembrane. Histological examination reveals a superficial erosionof the epithelium with underlying round-cell infiltration, whichshows a tendency to radiate from the original focus. There ismoderate perivascular infiltration extending for a considerabledistance under the normal epithelium. No. 2. The small bits ofmaterial from the vaginal ulcers have no definite gross Plate 2. 430 ARTHUR STEIN, Microscopic examination reveals a deep erosion with completedestruction of the squamous epithelium, marked round-cell andplasma-cell infiltration. The histological character of these ulcers, the marked perivascular and plasma-cell infiltration, their location, and indolent course appear to warrant the diagnosis of syphiliticlesions of the labia and vagina. Material from the labia and vaginahas been stained by Levaditis method, and a careful search failsto reveal spirocheta in the tissues. CONCLUSIONS. 1. In conformity with modern knowledge, and in the interest of abetter understanding of the disease, all misleading names such asesthiomene or lupus vulvae should be exterminated from the literature. 2. Syphiloma vulvas correctly designates the disease as a mani-festation of tertiary lues. 3. A positive Wassermann test is not essential in view of the long-standing chara
