Ares rockets. Illustration of the Ares rockets that were planned be used to launch spacecraft as part of NASA's Constellation Program. This program, announced by the US government in 2004, was intended to put astronauts back on the Moon by 2020, and then carry out missions to Mars. The rocket at right is Ares V, the heavy cargo launch vehicle. Ares I (left) was to launch crews in the crew exploration vehicle Orion. The rockets would have used a combination of liquid oxygen/hydrogen tanks (orange) and solid-fuel rocket boosters (white). Ares V was planned to be around 100 metres tall. The rockets were named for the Greek god of Mars, and are named 'I' and 'V' after the Apollo program's Saturn I and Saturn V rockets. The Constellation program was cancelled in 2009.
