Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a Pelagipodovirus HTVC011P pelagiphage. Phages are viruses that infect bacteria. This phage, discovered in 2013, mainly infects SAR11 marine bacteria, which were previously thought to be immune to viral infection. SAR11 was thought to be the most abundant organism on the planet, but viral density studies have shown that Pelagipodovirus HTVC011P is more abundant.
