NORMAL AND PATHOLOGICAL PHYSIOLOGY OF THE MUSCLESSUPPLIED BY THE MUSCULO-SPIRAL NERVE. In considering the physiology of muscles the im-mortal works of Duchenne (of Boulogne) will be re-ferred to. Duchenne, by local application of electri-city to muscles, and by observation of cases of pro-gressive atrophy in children and adults, has estab-lished the normal and pathological physiology ofmuscles. His statements have been confirmed innearly every case. THE MUSCULO-SPIRAL NERVE 27. Fig. 6.—Position of normal handin repose. Before describing the appearance of the hand inparalysis of the different nerves of the upper extremity,it is necessary to realise what is the natural position of the sound hand whenat rest, the muscles beingas nearly as possiblecompletely relaxed andthe forearm resting on ahorizontal level (fig. 6). The position is thenone of a slight degree offlexion and pronation ofthe wrist, which also in-clines to the ulnar fingers are flexed onthe metacarpal bones;flexion of the phalanges is marked, especially theflexion of the second phalanx on the first, whichoccurs in all the fingers from the index to the littlefinger, and becomes more marked in each. The thumb, besides beingslightly fiexed, shows pro-nounced opposition. So that in the normal statethe tone of the flexor and pro-nator muscles is superior tothat of the extensors. The musculo - spiral is thenerve of extension. In theupper arm it supplies thetric
