Page from a 1224 Arabic edition of "De Materia Medica" by the Greek physician, pharmacologist and botanist Pedanius Dioscorides (40 - 90 AD). The illustration depicts a physician and attendant with heliotrope. Dioscorides served in the Roman army under emporer Nero. Like many early physicians, he depended on herbs and other substances for medicinal treatments. The thistle is one of approximately 600 plants and 1000 minerals and animal derivatives for therapeutic use he described in De Materia Medica, the first extensive pharmacopeia.
