Leontinoi, greek walls - Sicily

Leontinoi, one of the most ancient Greek colonies of Sicily was founded in 729 BC by a colony of calcidesi, led by Teocle, from nearby Naxos. The city was built for a dual purpose, to stop the expansion to the north of Syracuse Corinthian and above all, to have the rule of the fertile plain of Catania. The most ancient settlement occupied the Calcidese San Mauro hill, later, when the city became a major commercial center, the village included Metapiccola the opposite hill, with the immediate downstream San Mauro.
