Ice wedge polygons in Alaskan tundra, aerial photograph. Ice wedge polygons are one of the most common ground patterns in the Arctic, formed due to the interaction of water erosion and the ground conditions in the extremes of the Arctic climate. Research has been carried out studying the marginal ponds that form in the summer in such ecosystems, which are being affected by climate change. Photographed near the Chipp River area on the north slope of Alaska, on 23 July 2010.
