The Con-servatives, under threats of a dissolution, agreedto allow the ministry to proceed with its billsfor establishing a national bank and a goldcurrency, and making the higher judiciary irre-movable except for cause, and promised not tooppose the foreign policy of the Cabinet. Thecompromise ministry, nevertheless, could notstand, and on December 31 the Parliament wasdissolved, and new elections were appointedfor Feb. 4, 1889.
