On March 9, 1862, the Union Monitor battled the Confederate frigate called the Merrimac, remade into iron-clad by Confederates.

The monitor was a type of warship used in the Civil War. Swedish engineer John Ericsson designed the one named Monitor for the Union navy and it was launched in 1862. This vessel, heavily clad in iron, was characterized by a revolving turret that carried two 11-inch guns. The deck was only 18 inches above the water. On March 9, 1862, the Union Monitor battled the Confederate frigate called the Merrimac, which the Confederates had remade into an iron-clad. The battle (pictured in this 1876 engraving) took place at Hampton Roads, Virginia.
