Costume of the Bayeux area, near the sea. The bonnet is called a "dormeuse" or sleeper. Servants often wear false sleeves in a contrasting colour. The red rosettes on the black shoes are coquettish. Hand-colored fashion plate illustration by Lante engraved by Gatine from Louis-Marie Lante's "Costumes des femmes du Pays de Caux," 1827/1885. With their tall Alsation lace hats, the women of Caux and Normandy were famous for the elegance and style.
