Lentigo maligna. Close-up of lentigo maligna on the cheek of an 88-year-old female patient. This is a very early stage of a malignant (cancerous) melanoma. This cancer arises from the skin's melanocytes, the cells that produce the pigment (melanin) that give skin its colour. At this stage the cancer has not spread and is contained in the epidermis, the top layer of the skin. When caught at this stage the prognosis is good.
