. Journal of electricity. the extreme gain which can beobtained if there is an opportunity to modify thediameter of the complete water wheel runner and thenumber of buckets to provide the most favorable rela-tions for any given set of conditions. To carry out thereconstruction in this form is generally productive ofeven better results; but is not always convenient,as it may mean pressing off of the shaft a number ofrotating parts, which have long been set to their estab-lished positions. Those who have attempted the re-moval of parts that were pressed to place a numberof years before, will recognize what this means in la-bor, and particularly in time. There have at times been opportunities to alterthe wheel diameter by turning down the wheel center or body, while it still remains in place on the some designs of equipment, this has proven verysuccessful. Again, conditions have been encountered in thereconstruction or modernizing of the older plants, which have made it impractical to attempt to install. INCREASE IN POWER OUTPUT Characteristic of the results obtained by substituting a new andmodern high efficiency form of bucket on an existing water wheelrunner.—Diagram 1. the modern form of bucket. This sometimes comesabout through insufficient clearances between the ex-treme outer diameter of the rotating wheel and sta-tionary parts of the wheel housing, nozzle or govern-ing mechanism. The modern form of bucket is some-what larger in all its dimensions than the older typeand the major increase of size is in a direction radialwith the wheel axis. As a result, it nearly alwayshappens that a new set of buckets installed on an oldwheel center or body makes the complete runnerlarger in diameter than before. Chart No. 2 has been prepared to illustrate anaverage daily load curve in a large system carryingpractically every class of commercial load. The curveis plotted to show: The water consumption over an average periodof 24 hours and at 100 per cent efficiency.
