Of this Hefner gives a good illustra-tion amongst the varied types which he has selected froma hundred helms of iron found in 1841 in a cistern at thecitadel of Chalcis, in the Isle of Negropont. They havebeen assigned to the XHIth and XlVth centuries. Thissimple and effective defence is given with those of theearlier (See woodcut.)
