Gail Borden (1801-1874), US inventor. Borden is most famous for his invention of the modern condensed milk process in the 1850s (patented 1856). His business expanded and by 1865 had become a major employer. It was known as the Eagle Brand Condensed Milk Company, and later as the Illinois Milk Condensing Company, then the New York Condensed Milk Company. Other inventions by Borden included a 'meat biscuit'. Borden County, Texas, USA, was named in his honour, as was the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin, Illinois, where his company had operated. This artwork is from a collection relating to the 1939 New York World's Fair.
