Traction is madein the direction that will secure speediest delivery. It will sometimes befound more convenient to reverse the rule and to apply the blades along thechilds back, especially if the perineum is very long and rigid. The best planis to apply the blades wherever there is most room. The application of for-ceps to the after-coming head is the only means of saving the child when thecervix has retracted about the neck and resists all efforts to deliver by trac-tion upon the Fig. 214.—Forceps extraction of the after-coming head: the arrows showthe direction of traction.
