File Photo: Bottles of Stolichnaya Russian vodka produced at Moscow Distillery Crystal (Kristall) formerly State Wine Distillery No. 1, Moscow, Russia, 1992. The distillery is known for producing the iconic Stolichnaya vodka. Moscow State Wine Warehouse was founded as a Russian state vodka and wine distillery in 1901. The distillery was closed after the collapse of the Russian Empire and the Bolshevik revolution in 1917 and restored in 1923 as a state-owned enterprise of the Soviet Union. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Crystal and its parent company Soyuzplodimport were bankrupt in 1997 and Stolichnaya along with a number Russian vodka brands were privatized. Exiled Russian-born billionaire Yuri Shefler created the Stoli Group and all Stolichnaya vodka purchased outside of Russia is made in Latvia by his Stoli Group. After the Russian invasion of the Ukraine Shefler, who lives in Switzerland, announced that Stolichnaya produced by the Stoli Group will now be called and labeled as “Stoli”
