At c high, the Rudston Monolith is the tallest standing stone in Britain, a tapering gritstone pillar brought from outcrops some 10 miles away. Situated within a henge monument on high ground it once formed the focus of a Neolithic ritual landscape including at least four massive linear earthworks (processional ways?) known as cursuses. It stands amongst Christian graves beside All Saints' Church first built in Norman times to neutralize the stone's pagan power. The church has Decorated Gothic additions and was restored in 1861.
