12/04/17 David Shawcross, 83, smartens up a giant 18ft tall topiary chick in time for Easter. The couple moved into their home in Callow, near Wirksworth, Derbyshire in 1966. The house was partially derelict and the garden had been neglected for decades. But one spindly hawthorn sapling soon caught the coupleÕs eyes. David, a retired art teacher said: ÒWe didnÕt choose it, it chose itself. It began to grow into a ragged and ramshackle bush but clearly had the shape of a chick. So I began to clip it to help it along. Next month it will with beautiful pink blossom. It gets one big trim in the autumn but I always tidy it up before Easter too.Ó All Rights Reserved F Stop Press Ltd. (0)1773 550665
