It indicated the mar-riage of the lake with the ocean. Before the canal was built it costten dollars and took three weeks to transport a barrel of flour fromBuffalo to Albany. By the canal it could be sent through in a week,at a cost of thirty cents. To-day a constant procession of grain boatstraverses the canal, day and night, from west to east, and one of boatsladen with merchandise from east to 294 THIRTY YEARS OF PEACE AND PR OGRESS. No man ever had a more enthusiastic reception. Fortyyears and more had passed since he left the United States. He was now nearly seventy, one ofthe last surviving friends and aides ofWashington, and the whole peoplerose to do him honor. He spent more than a year travel-ling through the nation, visiting everyState, and being everywhere greetedwith affection and enthusiasm. It was just fifty years afterthe battle. Lafayette had spent much of his fortune in the Americancause, and in recompense Congress voted him two hundredthousand dollars and twenty-four thousand acres of land.
