The British Occupation of Java An Auster air observation post aircraft of 656 Squadron flies low to investigate some buildings outside the British perimeter line around Surabaya (Soerabaja). On some occasions suspicions of the presence of Indonesian nationalists were confirmed when small arms fire was directed against the aircraft. On locating an Indonesian position the crew of the Auster could call down artillery fire or contact an infantry patrol to investigate further.
