Although still tradi-tionally attributed to Giovanni Bellini, it showsno further signs of that masters influences thando Alvises other paintings. This picture is almosta replica of the Madonna of 1489, in the Galleryat Vienna. A later, and unfortunately but little-known work by Alvise, is the beautiful singlefigure of Sta. Giustina de Borromei, in thecollection of Sig. Bagati-Valsecchi at Milan—oneof the most exquisite creations of later VenetianQuattrocento art. A careful study of Alvises works, and moreespecially of certain of the highly-individualizedheads to be found in his various altar-pieces—not to mention the existence of at least onesigned portrait (once in the Bonomi-Cereda LUIGI VIVARINI. Among themwe may note such works as the head of a man, ascribed to Antonello da Messina, in the CommunalGallery at Padua ; the charming bust of a boy, once in the Duchatel Collection at Paris, and nowbelonging to Mr. Salting, formerly attributed bothto Antonello and Andrea Solario ; the fine portraitof Bernardo di Sella in the Louvre, generallyascribed to Savoldo; that of a man with a hawk,at Windsor Castle, also given by some critics toSavoldo • another remarkably vigorous bust of aman, attributed
