The Sailors Stone near Gibbet Hill, marking the place of a murder in 1786. Overlooking the old A3 Hindhead.

(See C3NR55 for image before area was restored). Marking the spot of a murder of a sailor traveling along the Portsmouth to London road through what was then a wild and remote area. The three assailants had befriended the victim in a local inn; then robbed and killed him at this spot. Such was the public outcry at this cold blooded act on a sailor trying to return to his ship at Portsmouth that a memorial stone; which became known as the Sailor s Stone was erected on the site of the murder in the same year. The three were convicted and hanged the same day on a gibbet nearby; hence gibbet hill. Reputedly the bodies of the three murderers were left hanging in chains by the old road; only removed once they had completely disintegrated. The inscription on the stone reads: Erected; In deteftation of a barbarous Murder; Committed here on an unknown Sailor; On Sep. 24th 1786; By Edwd. Lonegon; Mick Cagy & Jas. Marshall; Who were all taken the fame day; And hung in Champs near this place. Whofe theddeth Man s Blood by man thall his; Blood be thed. Gen: Chap 9: Ver 6
