About the closeof the year it was sent to northern Alabama to watch the movements ofHoods army, and had an engagement with a largely superior force atFlorence. Overpowered by numbers it was compelled to fall back toNashville, where it was transferred to Gen. Hatchs command, and par-ticipated in the numerous engagements attending Hoods raid into Ten-nessee. On the first days battle before Nashville it lost seventy in offi-cers and men. The leader, Maj. William P. Story, was badly wounded,and the command devolved upon Maj. James T. Abernathy. At the close■of the campaign the regiment was sent to New Orleans, where it remained.
