Gladiators (gladiatores, "swordsmen" or "one who uses a sword," from gladius, "sword" were professional fighters in ancient Rome who fought against each other, wild animals, and condemned criminals, sometimes to the death, for the entertainment of spectators. These fights took place in arenas in many cities from the Roman Republic period through the Roman Rijksmuseum van Oudheden is the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities, located in Leiden, The Netherlands. It grew out of the collection of Leiden University and still closely co-operates with that university. The museum calls itself the national center for archaeology, and focuses on ancient Egypt, the Near East, the classical world of Greece and Rome and the early Netherlands
