Tree trunk root silhouette on salt marsh with sea ice, below blue sky white sun, south to Southport coastline, Granny' Bay, Fairhaven, Lancashire, UK

The winter of 2010-2011 included the coldest December since Met Office Records began in 1910. The mean December 2010 temperature was minus 1 degree Celsius. In some places the temperature was down to minus 10 degrees Celsius. Late November to Boxing Day 2010 included two spells of severe winter weather in the UK with very low temperatures and significant snowfall. The beach between Fairhaven and St Annes, on Lancashire's Fylde Coast, in December 2010 displayed large areas of land-fast sea ice, several centimetres thick. White sun shining brightly in blue sky above a silhouette tree trunk root lying on salt marsh with dark sea ice blocks at Granny's Bay, Fairhaven, looking south across the River Ribble Estuary towards the Southport coastline.
