He wasone of the first elders of the Woodland Presby-terian Church. His enthusiasm and unselfish devotion toSunday-school mission work led to his appoint-ment as secretary of Missions of the AmericanSunday-School Union, and recording secretaryof its Board, February 19, 1861, a position hecontinued to fill with great acceptance untilhis death in 1881, a period of twenty booklet entitled An Unselfish lyife, set-. Strong leaders have been connected withour work from the beginning and Mr. Wurtswas among the foremost of them. He waslargely instrumental in laying the firm founda-tion upon which much of the subsequent suc-cess of the HoUond school has been built. Alady who was a teacher during his superin-tendency thus writes of his work and its results: I was not with Mr. Wurts in the earlyyears of his work in Moyamensing. but I haveoften heard him speak of the difficulties en-countered, the rough surroundings, and theunsatisfactory arrangements in the old hose-house, with boards placed on boxes or barrelsfor seats, and the rough, undisciplined elementhe had to contend with.
