The drive from either Uniontown or Genesee to Lewis-ton is one of the most strikingly picturesque that can befound in the whole range of western travel, and touristsare strongly advised not to omit it. The road passes overa beautiful rolling and fertile country for the first five or-six miles, and then comes suddenly out on the brink of anenormous and precipitous declivity overlooking the valleysof the Snake and Clearwater rivers, and a vast extent ofhilly country stretching off to Craigs mountain on thesouth and Blue mountains on the southeast. Lewistonseems to be within rifle-shot distance at the foot ofthe precipice, but is only reached by a zig-zag drive ofover five miles down the mountain side. The valley inwhich Lewiston is situated is fully half a mile in verticaldistance below the general level of the rolling plainscountry north of SOUTH OF SNAKE RIVER. An extensive, fertile and beautiful agricultural countrylies south of the Snake river in Washington and laps overon the west into Oregon. It extends from the Snake andthe Clearwater southward to the Blue mountains, and hasan average width of about fifty miles. Its length from thebend of the Snake river at Lewiston to its western limitsis about 150 miles. It is one of the most productivegrain-growing regions in the world. The average yield ofwheat, taking one year with another, is about thirtybushels to the acre, and crops of forty to fifty bushels tothe acre are
