The shape of back head may be obtainedby bending a piece of iron over the outerside sheet. The position of staybolt holesand mud-ring holes should be markedupon it. They may then be transferredto drawing, and lines produced from thesepoints normal with contour of backhead to meet the line which representsflange of back and tube sheets; thesepoints may then be marked on a piece ofhoop iron. Holding the hoop iron a dis-tance equal to half the thickness of sidesheet away from the line, these points arethen transferred to first vertical row ofstaybolt holes in front and back of sidesheet; lines are struck across the sheet. The second rivet hole from ends inflanges should be countersunk on the in-side, so that rivet may be driven flush tomake room for caulking end sheets. Thecrown is then replaced, and box rivetedand caulked. The crown bars are thenput on and riveted. The firebox is thenput in the boiler, lowering it as much aspossible in order to hold on the rivets inupper part of back head conveniently. Itshould also be put forward as far as pos-sible, so that the rivets in lower part ofback head may be held on without trouble. The back head is put in position andriveted, after which the firebox is putin place and door hole riveted. The bottom of shell. It will probably need toto be from 24 to 30 inches in width.
