Report of proceedings incidental to the erection and dedication of the Confederate monument. dead at Oakwoodscemetery, Chicago, last Memorial Day, and the subsequent visit of the First regimentinfantry I N G to .\tl,intri and llie cities of the south 1 am yours very truly. (Signed) FKED. N SAKCiliNT. Soirrlarw THE BEGINNING OE THE END. As the result of Chicagos hospitable demonstration toward therenowned ex-Confederate officers and other distinguished southernvisitors on the occasion of the dedication of the Confederate ninnnnientin Oakwoods cemetery. May 30, 1895, the First regiment infantry,I. N, G., made a tour through several southern states, and such was itsenthusiastic reception b\ the people as it •?marched through Georgia, that the seed for burying the liatchot of thr sixties has been thoroughlysown. On the streets of Augusta, company i\f, Capt. Edw. W. Switzer, commanding, fired volleys over the imaginar\ grave of the unpleasantpast. As the smoke from its rifles arose and became lost in tlie lialmyatmospliere of the southern clime, so should the O J o 2<^5 hatreds and strifes of the belligerent era be made to \ anish and recollec-tions be cherished imlj, of the honorable, valiant and noble deeds <:)f thecontending elements of the conntry. Let the sod be turned withbayonets, all wrongs burieti neath their arch of steel; let dissensionsdisperse and disappear as smoke, and ever recollect and herald thechivalrous attainments and soldicrK prowess of the opposing forces oftlu- two sections, now at peace, reunited and welded with bonds of interestanil love. The sun rising clear, in a cloudless sky, by its golden lightilluminates the bright future of the Nation.
