Mining techniques. 19th-century artwork showing techniques used in coal mining. The top diagram refers to the phenomenon of active creep, where the underlying rock moves around the coal deposits. The second diagram shows how the seams of coal can be worked out, but that pillars need to be put in place to prevent collapses like the one shown at left. The final diagram (bottom) shows an example of a mining ventilation system. Artwork from 'Encyclopaedia Metropolitana' (1845).
