Summer homes among the mountains on the Central New England railway ... ot of some mossy rock, and it isseldom that these pools do not yield fine specimens of the speckledbeauty to those who patiently follow the gentle art. But Maygives place to balmy June; surely the thousands from the cooped-upcities must agree with James Russell Lowell in saying, What is sorare as a day in June? But this month, the freshest and mostenchanting, gives place to July, the month that makes city lifeunbearable. Here the climate is tempered by cool breezes, andthousands seek these hills to breathe the pure air and enjoy anddrink in the beauties of Nature. The Berkshire and Litchfield hillsnot only possess those qualities which go to make up a popular placeof summer sojourn, but they are the only autumn resort in theUnited States. With autumn the seaside resorts become depopulated, for theoutlook is dreary and the air is chill. Not so in these hills, forthe numbers who linger are augmented by the hundreds who comenere to enjoy the ideal October days. With autumn the foliage 22. takes on a gayer hue, and the hills, clothed in brilliant reds, purpleand shimmering gold, look as if a great Persian robe had beenthrown over them, and here one may Gather leaves of a thousand dyes,Speckled witn crimson, spotted with greenAnd shaded with hues from Paradise. For a time these mountains remain clothed in their resplendentcolors, and then in a night the foliage is removed to form a greatcarpet for the earth, but the same warm climate lingers for severalweeks, and there is the same haze about the distant hills which anartist strives to put upon the canvas. Now is the time to gather nuts, to hunt for gray squirrels andpartridges, to take long excursions, and the ideal time to play at last autumn gives place to winter, the lakes are covered withglassy ice and a white carpet covers the entire land. Perhaps wehave a rain storm which freezes on the trees, every shrub is trans-formed into a thing
