At the edge of the field they came to their re-ser\-e where they watched the movements of the troops cross-ing at the ford. The infantry crossed in advance and tookdefensive position but were not resisted when they none but cavalry were upon the opposite bank,since a well directed fire from an infantry force would haveannihilated the force in the boats.
