The pickets, there posted,fired some aimless, harmless shots, mounted their horses andscampered away across an open field, having no loss except astraw hat. At the edge of the field they came to their re-ser\-e where they watched the movements of the troops cross-ing at the ford. The infantry crossed in advance and tookdefensive position but were not resisted when they none but cavalry were upon the opposite bank,since a well directed fire from an infantry force would haveannihilated the force in the boats.
