As to the earliest observations ofmodern tabes, the traces are very in-distinct. To the clinicians of the six-teenth and seventeenth centuries, theconfused mass of paraplegias was prac-tically insoluble, and it would appearthat it was only in the beginning of thenineteenth century that the process ofdifferentiation took place.
