Soundness.—The purpose of this test is to detect those qualitiesin a cement which tend to destroy the strength and is usually manifested by a change in volume whichcauses cracking, swelling, or disintegration. If the pat is notproperly made, or if it is placed where it will be subject to any dryingduring the first 24 hours, it may develop what are known as shrink-age cracks, which are not an indication of unsoundness and shouldnot be confused with disintegration cracks, as shown in Figs. 2 and shrinkage cracks should develop after the first 24 or 48
