Cockchafer (Melolontha melolontha), or May bug. This is a European scarab beetle. The larvae are large white grubs that live underground and can take 3 years to mature. They feed on plant roots, pupate, and develop into an adult in around six weeks. The adult beetles are noted for their noisy, clumsy, buzzing flight. They live for a few months and damage trees by feeding on leaves and flowers.
