The Venezualan freedom fighter, Simon Bolivar (also known as El Libertador or the Liberator), after whom Bolivia is named, liberated the country from Spanish rule in 1824 and became its first president in 1825. Numerous streets are named after him throughout the country and his statue occupies an important site in the centre of the capital city, La Paz.
