Bowel cancer surgery. Surgeon's assistant preparing a man for bowel surgery. The abdominal surface that will be cut open during the surgery is being cleaned and disinfected with an iodine solution. The surgery was intended to remove only a relatively small part of the colon due to the diagnosis of what was thought to be a small lesion, but when the abdomen was opened it was found that a large malignant tumour (carcinoma) was present. The surgery was changed to a Hartmann's operation that removed the tumour and the surrounding intestines (the sigmoid colon and rectum). The healthy intestine was diverted to a colostomy opening in the side of the abdomen.
