The greatest safety from fire does not lie in the em-ployment of incombustibles for packing, but in soplacing the lamp that its direct heat does not pass intothe machine. For this reason we prefer to place thelamp below an asbestos-jacketed heater, entirely outsideof the machine. In this manner we carry into theheating chamber a large volume of moderately-warmedair, rather than a small quantity intensely heated ; bywhich process we gain the two-fold advantage ofabsolutely no risk of fire and comparative ease inevenly distributing the heat. A room, in cold weather,with the source of heating in one portion only, is neverwarmed equably, while in the summer its temperature.
