The history of Battery C falls roughly into twoperiods; the first dealing with the stay at Camp Grant, during which the Battery was really nothing more thana replacement organisation, and the second, dealingwith the Hike to Sparta and the trip to France. AtCamp Grant more than three hundred men passedthrough the Battery, with varying degrees of training, and with more varying subsequent assignments. Somesaw action as infantrymen, machine gunners, and even artillerymen; others werewarehouse clerks in the southern camps, while others never got past the Utilitiesat Camp Grant. Three at least. Hodgson, Dooley and Merriam got commissionsin different Training Camps. Taken all in all, it was very typical of the greatNational Army, the incessant shifting, transferring and re-assigning, to get menwhere they were best
