Berlin, Rathaus Köpenick. Red Brick Gothic-style town hall by Hugo Kinzer and Hans Schütte built 1901-5. Historic listed building has a 54-metre-high tower. The Captain of Köpenick is remembered by a plaque and a bronze statue at the entrance of the Town Hall In 1906 a 57 year old unemployed cobbler, Wilhelm Voigt, bought a captain’s uniform at a flea market. He convinced some soldiers that he was a real captain and they went to the town hall to arrest the Mayor of Köpenick, Dr. Georg Langerhans and sent him to to the Neue Wache guardhouse in Berlin. He demanded 3,557 marks from the city coffers in return for a receipt. He was caught and sentenced 10 days later. The hoax was the inspiration for Carl Zuckermeyer’s comedy ‘The Captain of Köpenick’.
