The Governor and council so warmly engaged in thesuccess of this enterprise, that I had very little trouble ingetting matters adjusted; and on the 2d day of Janu-ary, 1778, received my instructions, and 1,200 pounds [ster-ling] for the use of the expediton, with an order on Pitts-burgh for boats, ammunition, &c. Finding from the Gover-nors conversation in general to me, on the subject, that hedid not wish an implicit attention to his instructions shouldprevent my executing any thing that would manifestly tend.
