London Ontario, Canada - January 1, 2012. The ElectroMotive diesel plant owned by Caterpillar in London Ontario sits idle on New Year`s day as the company and CAW (Canadian Auto Workers) Union try to figure out their next step. On December 30, 2011 the union voted 98% in favour of a strike after receiving the last contract offer from the company that would see their hourly wage and benefits cut in half and the removal of their pension plan. The existing contract expired at 11:59pm on December 31, 2011. In 2008 Prime Minister Stephen Harper visited the plant and announced $5 million in tax breaks. It is suspected that the company is planning on moving manufacturing facilities to a factory in Muncie Indianna, USA that has been recently re-opened. On December 29, 2011 the company erected a fence around the entire facility and posted `No Trespassing` signs on the fence. The factory that has been in London for 61 years employed 700 union and non union workers.
