He attended Newmarket Cadet School in November 1916 and received his commission in the 7th Battalion, Liverpool Regiment. Lt Bass then transferred from the Territorial Force to serve as an officer with the Royal Marines on the Western Front in March 1917. He is believed to have survived the war.
