The first winter was spentencamped on the banks of theMississippi, opposite the mouth ofthe Missouri. May 16, 1804, thecompany, composed of nine youngmen of Kentucky, 14 MEKRiwETHER LEWIS. two Canadian boatmen, an inter-preter and a hunter, with one keel boat fifty odd feet long, and twoopen boats, began their ascent of the Missouri. Passing the littleFrench village of St. Charles, the first large tributary of the Missourireached was that of the Osage. Proceeding on their journey, passingthe Kansas, in due time the Platte was reached. Here they found anumber of tribes of Indians, among others the PaAvnees, Ottoes andKites.
