1959 timber house (NZ) with chimney removed above roof for earthquake precaution. Remaining chimney used as clothesline support.
When the house was repainted and reroofed (2019) the roofers removed the above roof section of the original 1959 chimney. This is a fairly common practice in New Zealand, where earthquakes can topple chimneys. Inside the house, the fireplace is lined and used to hold stereo and TV equipment and the flat screen TV sits above the old fireplace. A clever space saving solution in a small house.
