In the treatment of arterial hemorrhage prompt action is required;bleeding from a large artery like the femoral may cause death in aminute or two; as a matter of fact a large proportion of the deathson the battlefield are due to hemorrhage. The thing to be done is to compress the artery between the woundand the heart, or if that cannot be done then in the wound itself; thepoint selected for pressure should be where the artery crosses a bonebecause there it can be made most eftective.
