Carbide lamps,or acetylene gas lamps,are simple lamps that produce and burn gas which is created by the reaction of calcium carbide (CaC2) with water.


This is a Autolite Carbide Lamp worn on a anthracite coalminers helmet or cap to help light the interior of a coal mine while working. They were  widely used in mining in the early twentieth century . This one is from the northern coal fields of the Pennsylvania anthracite coal region of the USA.
