Historic Listed Buildings & modern Additions The power station is situated on the Berlin-Spandau shipping canal and belongs to the Swedish energy group Vattenfall. The historic building was built 1899 to 1901 to plans by Franz Schwechten as a three- phase power plant. The old piston steam engines were replaced by steam turbines in 1905 and in 1907-1908 a second machine and boiler house were built. In the years 1929/1930 there was an expansion and modernization under the direction of Walter Klingenberg and Werner Issel. In 1987 a large part of the old plant was demolished to allow for further modernization and a new heating block was built. This was completed in 1990 but some of the old buildings were preserved and are listed monuments The plant was fueled using coal but since the end of 2013, biomass has been used as a fuel in addition to hard coal. From 2026, the power plant will be fired exclusively with biomass and natural gas.
