A British five-piece dance band, Jack Monks Jazz Band, onstage in Sutton, Surrey (now a borough of London), UK in December 1937. Early dance and swing bands had their heyday back in the inter-war years in the UK. The music was popular in dance halls and hotel ballrooms during the 1920s and 1930s – often called a ‘Golden Age’ of British music. Bands typically played melodic, good-time music that had American jazz and big band influences but also maintained a Britishness that came from the music hall tradition. The band size went from a trio of musicians up to a mini-orchestra and many of the individual players would play in several bands. This dance music of the era still attracts an audience who are keen on the retro culture of that era. This image is from an old glass negative. It will look slightly soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1930s photograph.
